Understanding assembly pathways & structures of viruses

How is the complex process of assembling and releasing infectious virus particles from a cell orchestrated?

What cellular proteins or other host factors are involved? Our lab uses a variety of biochemical, tissue culture, and structural biology tools to address these questions.

By understanding the mechanistic details of viral assembly and release from a cell, we aim to support antiviral drug design and discovery.

Protein structures

We use and develop Cryo-Electron Microscopy (cryo-EM) and Cryo-Electron Tomography (cryo-ET) and Subtomogram Averaging (STA) tools to determine the structures of viruses and viral proteins.

Mentoring

Providing a safe and inclusive environment is a major goal of the lab. Science benefits from including individuals with different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. It is my mission to work individually with each mentee to provide the instruction and environment that they need to define and achieve their academic and career goals.
